NURSE PRACTITIONER/PHYSICIAN ASSISTANT

UBMD Family Medicine seeking full time Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant (APP) for inpatient Withdrawal & Stabilization Unit at ECMC. Will work as part of an interdisciplinary team to provide treatment and stabilization of patients with substance use disorders with a focus on Medication Assisted Treatment and strategies for long-term recovery.

Responsibilities include performing physical exams, ordering diagnostics, managing and treating substance use disorders, and managing and treating a variety of comorbid medical conditions. Responsibilities are assigned based on the needs and acuity of the unit and total daily patient census, as well as discharges, admissions and consults. Will also support the attending physicians working on the unit, as needed.

Must be a graduate of an accredited NP/PA program, have current NYS license and BLS certification. Must have active DEA license. Experience in Family Medicine/Primary Care and/or Addictions preferred. ANP/FNP preferred. Must have ability to work independently, be flexible, demonstrate excellent judgment and initiative during demanding situations. Flexibility schedule available for 37.5 to 40 hours/week with  required availability to work one weekend per month and weekday on call  in rotation with other APP's, based on availability of shifts.

Pay range  includes  base salary and incentive bonus paid quarterly for annual total of approximately $10,000 to $12,000 (on top of base salary ranging from $110k to $125k). Paid malpractice, 18 days of PTO per year (accrued biweekly), $1500 annual CME (pro-rated based on hire date for first year), 3% monthly retirement contribution by company, $75,000 in company-paid life insurance, short-term disability, as well as health, dental, vision, HSA, FSA, options for voluntary short-term disability and long-term disability and 8 total holidays.

Job Summary:

• The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) will work with patients on the Withdrawal Stabilization Unit (WSU) and act as part of the care team to perform physical exams, order tests and diagnose and treat substance use disorders. Responsibilities are determined and assigned based on the needs and acuity of the unit as well as on total daily patient census, discharges, admissions and consults as determined by the Clinical Manager. Will support the attendings working on the unit, as needed.

Essential Functions:

• Performs the medical history and physical examination, and interprets the results of diagnostic studies of patients who are assigned to an attending physician following their admission or a request for a consultation from another attending physician.
• Develops a medical management plan with the WSU attending physician and orders appropriate therapy and additional diagnostic tests, if indicated.
• Re-evaluates the patient’s clinical course and interprets any additional diagnostic tests on a daily basis.
• Evaluates test findings, makes initial medical diagnoses and initiates appropriate action to facilitate the implementation of a therapeutic plan consistent with the continuing health care needs of the patient.
• Documents the appropriate clinical information in the electronic medical record (EMR), including history and physical, discharge summary and/or consultation reports in a timely manner in order to bill for services.
• Applies knowledge of coding to EMR documentation at the appropriate coding level to ensure adequate billing for services.
• Coordinates the inpatient medical management and discharge planning of the patient with the psychosocial care rendered by the counselors of the WSU.
• Participates in the design and implementation of treatment protocols for the type of patients managed by the collaborating physician.
• Assists in the development of the clinical databases used by the WSU (i.e. a “Detoxification Unit Registry”) and coordinates the maintenance of data. Duties may include reviewing medical records, interviewing patients and entering data.
• Teaches at assigned clinical conferences for the staff nurses and participates in weekly patient education on topics related to substance use disorders.
• Participates in assigned research-related activities that are relevant to the clinical obligations of the chemical dependency service.
• Acts within the scope of practice as defined by state law and according to the ECMC by-laws and policies/procedures, as well as OASAS guidelines.
• Responsible for on-call and weekend coverage, in rotation with other APP’s and as determined by staffing availability. Must be available to work a minimum of one (1) weekend per month.
• Performs other duties as requested by the Clinical Manager, collaborating physician, attending physician and or Associate Chief of Service if the scope of practice changes (i.e. new outpatient duties, assisting with clinical grants, etc.).
• Must complete the free 24-hour course for CME regarding substance use disorders within the first six (6) months of employment.
• Reviews and addresses daily tasks in EMR and as assigned by Clinical Manager.
• Complies with all OSHA regulations.
• Adheres to HIPAA and confidentiality policies and procedures.

Other Functions:

• Reviews company email on at least a daily basis in order to receive and address notifications and/or other pertinent information in a timely manner.
• Any other duties as requested or assigned by the Clinical Manager, collaborating physician, attending physician and or Associate Chief of Service Duties. Responsibilities and activities may change or new ones may be assigned at any time with or without notice.
• May be required to travel to other UBMDFM location(s) dependent on company need.
• Work hours and assignments may fluctuate depending on company/clinic needs.

Qualifications:

Education: Graduate of accredited Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner program. Current NYS license as Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner certified by the NYS Education Department.

 Experience: Minimum of two years’ experience in health care delivery, preferably in an inpatient setting. Experience in providing care and services to patients with substance use disorders preferred.

 Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: Excellent communication, flexibility, multi-tasking and organizational skills required. Experience using an EMR system strongly preferred.

Working/Environment Conditions:

• Position is in a well-lit, fast-paced, clean hospital environment.
